Coming out of the last corner at Crandon, two Monster Energy trucks pulled even. One was a two wheel drive Pro 2 driven by C.J. Greaves. The other was his father Johnny's four wheel drive Pro 4. They hit the final jump together and flew across the line in the air.
It was September 1, 2013, Labor Day weekend in northern Wisconsin, and the race was the AMSOIL Cup. Crandon fans call the track the Big House. The Cup is the one race of the weekend that puts the Pro 2 and Pro 4 trucks on the same track at the same time. The Pro 2s get a small head start. The Pro 4s line up behind them and have to fight through.
Chad Hord got the jump into the first turn and led early. C.J. passed him on the first lap and kept his foot down.
Behind them, Johnny was working. He was fifth by the fourth lap. By the eighth he had gone past Hord and was second, chasing the only Pro 2 still ahead of him. It belonged to his son.
C.J. heard it on the radio. The Pro 4 had caught up, and it was his dad. "I really had to focus and keep driving hard because I knew he would pass me," he said afterward. Johnny had already done it to him once that weekend, in another race.
Father and son had built a big gap over Hord, and for the final laps the track was theirs. They ran neck and neck. They came out of the last turn side by side, launched together, and landed so close that TORC officials had to review the finish before they could name a winner.
The call went to C.J. Johnny was second and Hord was third.
"You dream about it," Johnny said. "We both gave it everything we had, and it was a photo finish."
Later that night the No. 33 truck sat in the pits under the lights, still muddy from the Big House, with fans gathered behind it.
True races. Still kicking.
