THE RADIO

The Spotter Called Clear

Class 1 was flying the whoops on hard sun and a clean radio. Clear meant send it. The silt bank meant something else.

FAST 'N DIRTY

A Fast 'N Dirty fictional pit story.

We were mid-whoop in the Class 1, long-travel packing hard, roost hammering the tube work, hard sun on the light bar, when the spotter came over the radio with the two best words in desert racing: clear, clear. For four clean miles before that we were flying. Fast by Nature. Dirty by Choice. Nature loved the pace. Choice had put a friend on a ridge with a radio and called that a plan.

Pavement princesses get a course map, a cone, and a volunteer with a flag. A clean truck gets a closed course that stays closed. We got race pace, a soft-looking flat past the crest, and a radio that sounded like permission. Clear is not a survey. Clear is what you hear when the person on the ridge can see sky and you still cannot see the bottom of the silt.

At the trailer we had done the confident theater. Batteries charged. Channels locked. Spotter briefed like a weather report: call early, call twice, keep us honest. Nobody asked what "clear" meant when the bank looked dry from two hundred yards up. Nobody packed a shovel into the car. The shovel was still in the chase truck next to the tow strap we also meant to stage closer. We called that done.

We sent it over the crest on the clear call. The Class 1 dug in like it had found a second career in archaeology. Silt to the doors. Throttle useless. Radio suddenly full of opinions that arrived after the fact. We shut it down, climbed out into the white dust, and started digging with a spare tire, a floor jack handle, and the kind of language that does not improve boost.

Forty minutes later we were back on course, late, ugly, and still hearing clear in our heads like a punchline. The spotter was still loyal. So were we. The silt bank just had better timing.

The spotter called clear. The silt bank filed a different report.

The spotter called clear. The silt bank filed a different report. Next time we stage the shovel in the car and treat clear like a rumor until we can see the exit — so send it means measured, not hopeful.
