A race UTV at race pace throwing roost in daytime hard sun

THE HOOD

The Hood Pin Was a Suggestion

Fiction: the hood looked closed at the trailer. Forty miles later the co-driver was watching daylight under the front edge.

FAST 'N DIRTY

A Fast 'N Dirty fictional pit story.

At the trailer it was the last thing done before the helmets went on. Hood down. Pin through. A palm slap on the top of it, which is a gesture that has never tightened anything in the history of motorsport.

The pin was in about halfway. From above it looked seated. It looked seated because the clip was hanging on the far side in a way that suggested a job finished, and because everybody was in a hurry, and because it was the sixth thing on a list of six.

Forty-some miles in, Nadia — right seat, book on her knee — noticed a line of light where there had not been a line of light. Then the leading edge of the hood came up maybe an inch and dropped, then came up again, keeping time with the whoops.

She said 'hood, hood, stop' in a voice that got immediate compliance, and they stopped, and the whole thing was over before it was anything. That's the entire near-miss. A hood at speed that gets free is a windshield problem and a visibility problem and it happens fast, and it did not happen, because somebody was looking.

The fix took ninety seconds and used a spare pin from a coffee can of spare pins, because the guy who preps that UTV has been doing this a long time and keeps a coffee can of spare pins.

The part worth keeping isn't the pin. It's that nobody argued. Nadia called it, the driver stopped, they looked at it together, and they were rolling again in under two minutes. On a bad team that stop turns into a discussion about whether it's really necessary.

They now walk the car together before every start, both of them, touching each pin. It costs about forty seconds. Nadia does the pointing and the driver does the touching, which she says is the correct division of labor.

A palm slap has never tightened anything in the history of motorsport.
